James R. Edel --- B.RE, M.A. TESOL, CANADA TESL Accredited Standard 3

James grew up near Threehills, Alberta. He has been an ESL/ELL instructor since 2007 and at Columbia College since 2010 with a brief period teaching English in Japan where his family joined him. His wife, Yvonne and him have called Calgary home since 2007. He has three kids, Naomi, Joshua, and Rosemary.
  • James's first exposure to teaching English was in China in 1999 at Dongda Elementary School in Taiyuan, Shanxi, People’s Republic of China.
  • Later he became involved at a Chinese Church in Vancouver where he was an assistant pastor in a Chinese church for 2 years.
  • He received an MA in TESOL in 2008 from Trinity Western University (Langley, BC) and immediately moved to Calgary where the job market was hot.
  • Since moving to Calgary he has worked at Agape Language Centre, YWCA, Centre for Newcomers and Columbia College.

Volunteer Work:
  • He has volunteered teaching pronunciation classes at the New Canadian Friendship Centre and has trained volunteers in pronunciation methods.
  • He volunteers teaching all ages at his local church.

  • James is vice-president of CESLM (free church-based programs) which supports volunteers with language teaching and new-comers with language-learning (for 5 years).
  • He has presented at ATESL 2012 “That’s a Good Question”, ATESL 2013 “Incorporating Numeracy into Lesson Planning and the Classroom”, And ATESL 2014 “A Small-town Strategy for Publishing Students’ Stories”. Also, "Pronunciation Infused with Gestures" at Columbia College.

Key Beliefs:
  • James believes that students’ whole personalities, including their ethnic, cultural, and religious identities contribute to an active classroom where improvement and measurable progress are routine. As students invest in their language learning deep friendships between people form different cultures are forged which is of primary importance in this deeply divided, and struggling world.

Classes Taught:
  • He is currently a literacy, R/W instructor, L/S instructor, and grammar instructor in the English and Foundational Skills Department at Columbia College, Calgary.
